Near vision and reading

From around the age of 40, most people find close-up text harder to focus on. This is presbyopia — the eye's lens gradually loses flexibility — and it is a normal part of ageing, not a disease.

These are self-screening tools for general awareness, not a medical diagnosis. Screen brightness, colour calibration and room lighting all change what you see. See an optometrist or ophthalmologist for any real concern, for a proper eye test, and urgently if vision changes suddenly.

What a reading check shows

A near-vision check uses lines of text in shrinking sizes, read at a normal reading distance, to gauge how small a print you can comfortably make out. It is the near-vision counterpart to the distance letter chart. The tell-tale sign of presbyopia is holding your phone or a menu further away to focus.

Why the screen version is only a hint

Reading a phone tells you something, but text size on screen varies with the device, your zoom setting and how far you hold it, so it cannot substitute for a measured test at a fixed distance. An optometrist measures your near vision and prescribes reading glasses or a varifocal if you need them.

Contrast sensitivity

Not the same as sharpness — how well you tell subtle shades apart, which matters for night driving and fog.

Frequently asked questions

Do reading glasses make your eyes lazy?

No. Reading glasses simply correct focus for close work; they do not weaken your eyes. Presbyopia progresses on its own timetable whether or not you wear them.

At what age do people need reading glasses?

Most people notice presbyopia between 40 and 50. It is very common and easily corrected — an eye test confirms the right strength.
